Week 12: Global Climate
-
Week 12 Information

In this week, we cover global climate from chapter 17 of your textbook. The chapter recalls, first, the different factors that affect and determine the climate of a particular region. These climatic controls include seasonal and latitudinal variations in incident sunlight, proximity to land or sea, ocean and wind currents, and topographical effects. Global distributions for mean temperature and annual precipitation are presented and form the basis of climate classification using the Köppen system. Each of the five major climate types in the Köppen classification system are discussed in detail.
Learning Objectives:
- List climatic control factors and discuss on micro-, meso-, and macro-climate
- Compare and contrast the climatic classification models of the ancient Greeks, Waldimir Köppen, and C. Warren Thornthwaite.
- Describe the geographic locations and characteristics of the world’s major climate regions and subregions as classified today, including seasonal variations, vegetation types, and temperature and precipitation patterns.
- Exemplify the climate type of a location (Köppen sub-categories) based on the variation in yearly temperature and precipitation.
Let's begin our week with this fun video on weather vs. climate by CoCoRaHS educational series.
Activities and Assignments:
I. Discussion (20 grade points)
Initial Post for prompt 1 (Speculation and reasoning- Due Monday, 11/11 at 11:59 pm)
All questions: Due Wednesday (Nov. 13th) at 11:59 pm

Week 12 Assignments and Activities

Don't forget to mark your presence on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Attendance.
Due Monday:
-
In this week, every one of you is required to discuss on the following two prompts and provide feedback to at least one prompt from your classmates. Note that your initial post of prompt 1 (speculation and reasoning) is due on Monday night.
Prompt 1: Before reading the chapter, speculate on where the warmest, coldest, wettest, and driest regions are found on the Earth. Write your response with reasons for your choices as your initial post (Due Monday).
Due Wednesday
Now, go to the textbook chapter 17 and read all about various climate types and their details. After making a solid background knowledge on those extreme climate regions based on Köppen sub-categories, respond to your own post. In this response, specify where you were accurate and where not and why? If you needed to make corrections, make those with new reasoning as well. (Due Wednesday at 11:59 pm 8 points)
Prompt 2: Go to the website of State Climate Summaries of Michigan to read the text and graphs on Michigan’s climate: past, present, and future
And, discuss on the following (Due Wednesday at 11:59 pm, 8 points):
a) Climate moderating effects of lakes with examples
b) Past changes in Michigan’s temperature: distinctive features with evidences
c) Past changes in precipitation: trend of extreme precipitation
d) Projected changes in climate variables and possible impacts on human health, socioeconomic condition, and environment of Michigan. Use Focus On An Environmental Issue 17.4 from your textbook to elaborate your discussion on Michigan’s projected environment change and shift of Plant’s Hardiness zone.
Feedback: (Due Saturday, 16th November, 4 points)
-
Due Friday:

-
Answer part I and II below on a word document and submit in this folder using Assignment Wk12_your name as the file name:
I) Questions for Review: Q. 2, Q. 6, Q. 8, Q. 9, Q. 13 from Chapter 17
II) Following additional question:
Suppose a city has the mean annual precipitation and temperature given in table below. Based on Köppen climatic types:
a) How would this climate be classified?
b) On a map of North America, approximately where would this be located?
c) What type of vegetation would you expect to see there?
