Week 15: Air Pollution
-
Week 15 Information

We examine air pollutants and meteorological phenomena related to air pollution in this week from chapter-19 of your textbook. The chapter begins with a brief historical review of air pollution. The sources and environmental effects of the primary air pollutants carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and volatile organic compounds are discussed next. The characteristics of ozone are presented in some detail. A quantitative measure of air quality to the ground level, Air Quality Index (AQI) is examined next. You will see that while air quality has improved following the passage of clean air legislation, many urban areas still frequently exceed government-mandated standards.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define the term air pollutant, distinguishing between primary and secondary pollutants, and describe their respective impacts on human life.
2. Explain the predominant mechanisms for removing pollutants from the air.
3. List the sources, characteristics, and health risks associated with the occurrence of the most common air pollutants.
4. Describe air pollution trends and patterns observed in the United States since the Clean Air Act of 1970.
Lets begin the week by watching the following educational video on air pollution in Beijing, China.
