This module provides learning opportunities on atmospheric motion and small-scale winds. The module activities pertain to chapter 9 of your textbook. Wide variety of types of small- and middle-scale wind motions are examined in this chapter, ranging from short-lived microscale phenomena to the seasonal Asian monsoon system. The chapter begins with a quick classification of the scales of atmospheric motion and looks at the formation of eddies. A focus section on “Eddies and Air Pockets” examines the relationship between stability, vertical wind shear, and clear-air turbulence, which can present a hazard to aviation.
